What is a smartphone?
There is there is no official definition for what constitutes a smartphone but in general terms, it means a mobile phone with some advanced computing ability, beyond the ability to simply makes calls, send texts etc. A smartphone may run on a third-party operating system like Android, or in the case of an iPhone or BlackBerry, that company's own proprietry operating system. Such systems allow a smartphone to operate like a small computer, running apps (or programs) and utilizing high-speed internet connections.
We developed our Smart plans specifically for these often data-hungry smartphones. These handsets allow you to transmit and receive vast amounts of data in everyday use, often even when you're not actually using your phone. In terms of our Smart plans, any phone with the capability to connect via 'HSDPA', can benefit from the unlimited data they offer. HSDPA is the fastest mobile internet connection available in the island and is exclusive to Smart plan customers.
Upgrade to a Smart Plan
How to upgrade to a Smart Plan
If you are already signed up to a Sure Basic or Pay Monthly contract you can upgrade to the equivalent or higher Smart Plan at any time for an additional £10 per month (for example if you're on a Basic125, you can upgrade to a Smart125). Please pop in to a Sure store to upgrade.
Unlimited high speed mobile internet/HSDPA is only available on the Sure network in Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man. Data roaming rates apply when abroad.
Please note that if you switch to a Smart Plan from another Pay Monthly contract, you will only be entitled to handset discounts and re-sign offers at the date your original contract would have finished.
Upgrade from Pay As You Go
If you are on Pay As You Go or Sure Indie you need to sign up to a Smart Plan like any other new customer - you can still keep your existing number. Sign up online or ask in store.
What is mobile internet?
Mobile internet uses the mobile phone network to enable you to browse the internet and receive emails on mobile phones or computers fitted with a special dongle.
Different mobile handsets have varying capabilities and can use one or more of the technologies to get online. Some older phones for example use a method called Edge which is slower than using 3G which again is slower than HSDPA. Speeds up to 3G are delivered as standard on all mobile tariffs whereas Smart Plans offer the highest possible speeds over HSDPA, or High Speed Mobile Internet as we often call it.
Sure has coverage of all these standards throughout the Bailiwick of Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man and offer mobile internet for mobile phones. These services can be accessed by laptops if fitted with a dongle (a USB device containing a SIM card) where ever you are in the island.
Using inclusive minutes, data & texts
Smart plans give you included minutes, texts and data which can be used only when you are connected to the Sure network in Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man. If you are roaming abroad or are connected to a different network the included minutes, texts and data cannot be used and you will be charged.
Using included minutes
When you are connected to the Sure network included minutes can be used to call all mobiles and landlines regardless of operator in Guernsey, Jersey, the Isle of Man, UK, Northern and Southern Ireland (excluding calls to services with numbers starting 03, 05, 08 and 09).
Using included texts
Texts can be sent to any destination in the World (excluding premium rate texts), but you must be connected to the Sure network in Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man.
Using included data
Included data can only be used when you are connected to the Sure network in Guernsey, Jersey and Isle of Man. Using data when abroad or on another network can be very expensive, check our latest roaming rates before you connect.
Some BlackBerry users may have separate roaming arrangements allowing them data connectivity when abroad.
If you do not use all of your included allocation
If you do not use all of your free allocation, your free minutes, data and texts will roll over for 1 month only and will be added to your new allocation of minutes, data and texts at the beginning of the next month.
Add additional users to your plan
Adding an additional Sure number to your plan means that you can share your inclusive minutes, texts and data with them. Additional users can be great for small businesses, who would like to buy a single plan with a large amount of bundled free minutes and texts, shared amongst numerous users.
Additional users are added to an account on a rolling monthly basis, so you can opt in and out each month. To add or remove an additional user please call us on 01481 700700 or visit us in store.
Please note that additional users will not be eligible to unlimited calls, texts or data even if the account holder is signed up to a 18 or 24 month contract. The additional user will only have access to the number of texts that the standard 12 month contract with the plan allows (e.g. 400 texts with Sure400). The additional user and the account holder will both have access to and will use the first 400 texts free between them, but once 400 have been used in the month, the additional user will have to pay for their texts for the rest of the month, while the account holder can continue to use their unlimited allowance.
