Roaming with BlackBerry

Using your BlackBerry abroad

Blackberry Smart plans

BlackBerry Smart plan customers can roam with voice, SMS and data in any country where we have a roaming agreement.

Special BlackBerry roaming tariffs are available for UK, Europe or worldwide roaming which give you a 5MB data allowance for use in these destinations. Ask in store for further details.

BlackBerry Pay As You Go

BlackBerry Pay As You Go customers can roam with voice and SMS in any country where we have a standard Pay As You Go roaming agreement.

BlackBerry Pay As You Go does not enable access to mobile internet abroad, only when connected to the Sure network in Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man.

If you would like to be able to use mobile internet abroad you may prefer to switch to a Pay Monthly or Smart plan contract which will enable data roaming in a wide range of destinations worldwide.

How to turn off data abroad

Roaming rates apply for data-use when not on the Sure network. Due to the amount we are charged by other operators, data-use while abroad can be very expensive.

If you have your phone set to automatically receive and send emails, update applications or otherwise connect to the internet it is recommended that you turn these features off when you are abroad to avoid large roaming charges. You can do this by turning off your data access on your phone. This varies from phone to phone but can often be found by going to:

Menu > Manage settings > Network or Connection settings > Turn off mobile/roaming data

Check your phone's manual or website for correct instructions.

iPhone

There are several ways for iPhone users to control data access when away from home.

Switch off 'data when roaming'
Settings > General > Network > Switch Data Roaming to 'OFF'

Please note that this process will only prevent data use outside of the UK. You will still be charged roaming rates within the UK when not connected to the Sure network.

Switch off email downloads
Settings > General > Mail > Fetch new data needs to be turned OFF
Switch off 'Cellular Data'

Pre-iOS 4 iPhones

Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network > APN > Delete any text in this field

This will prevent any data use by your phone. To re-enable data, repeat the process and add 'internet' in the APN field.

iOS 4 iPhones or later

Settings > General > Network > Switch off 'Cellular Data'

* Due to the nature of the device we can not guarantee that you will not incur data charges when roaming non Sure networks.

Android

Exact settings may vary across different handsets but most Android phones will be similar to the process below. Check your phone's documentation if you're unsure.

Switch off 'data when roaming'
Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Switch 'Data Roaming' on or off
Switch off data completely
Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Network > Switch on or off to allow data traffic

Windows Mobile Phones

Windows > Settings > Wireless Controls > Switch 'Data Connection' on or off

How to change your time zone

Many BlackBerry handsets do not automatically change time zones when you go abroad, you will need to change your time zone manually. Simply go to:

Menu > Options > Date and Time > Select your time zone > Press Back and Save

Please be aware that by changing your time settings, your calendar will automatically update so any appointments will be transferred to when they would be in the new time zone. For example a meeting at 4pm set in GMT would automatically be synced to 5pm French time if you change your time zone to GST +1. This enables you to retain meetings.
